Alberta is a gas-heated province with long winters, sudden weather changes and two major metros that behave like separate markets. For trades businesses, that combination produces short, intense demand spikes, and owners who spend those spikes on the tools with no one minding the marketing.
The Alberta market and its buyers
Answer first: Calgary and Edmonton hold most of the province's search demand, and they should be treated as two campaigns, not one.
Beyond the two big cities, Red Deer, Strathcona County (Sherwood Park), Lethbridge, Airdrie, Wood Buffalo and St. Albert are meaningful markets of their own. Suburban and satellite communities often have less online competition than the core cities, which makes them good targets for a business trying to fix a lead shortage without fighting for the most expensive keywords.
Heating is dominated by one fuel. According to Statistics Canada, 76% of Alberta households relied mainly on natural gas for heat in 2023 and 14% on electricity. Furnace, boiler and gas-fitting work therefore anchors a large share of the province's urgent trades demand.
Seasons and which problem peaks when
Answer first: cold snaps create lead spikes that overwhelm small teams, and chinooks in the south can end them just as fast.
- Deep cold: furnace and frozen-pipe calls arrive in waves. The common failure is missed calls and no follow-up, so the no-time problem and the lead leak hit together.
- Chinook thaws in southern Alberta: demand can drop for days, then return. Ad budgets set for the spike keep spending into the lull unless someone adjusts them.
- Spring and summer: roofing, landscaping, decks and renovation. Project trades see more "just pricing" enquiries, a classic bad-lead pattern.
Regulators worth knowing
Answer first: Alberta's safety codes system is split across several bodies, and your trade decides which ones your customers might look up.
- The province's safety codes system covers ten disciplines, with ABSA handling pressure equipment and permits issued by accredited municipalities or the Alberta Safety Codes Authority.
- Compulsory certification trades need a journeyperson certificate or registered apprenticeship; only certified master electricians can get electrical permits.
- Businesses that take money up front and sell away from their normal premises may need a prepaid contractor licence.
- WCB-Alberta handles workers' compensation.

Programs that shape demand, as of October 2026
Answer first: Alberta has fewer homeowner energy programs than most provinces, so rebate-led marketing has less to work with here.
The Clean Energy Improvement Program lets homeowners in participating municipalities finance efficiency and renewable upgrades through their property tax. It only helps your marketing if your service area takes part. The federal oil-to-heat-pump grant closed to new Alberta applicants at the end of July 2026, and the province had no federal affordability retrofit agreement as of October 22, 2026. Confirm current status with each administrator before mentioning it.
How we would approach the four problems in Alberta
Answer first: protect the spikes first, then sharpen targeting, then build reviews in the quieter months.
- Cover the phone during cold snaps. A missed-call text-back and a simple overflow plan stop the worst leaks. Services like the ones described on CallText.chat cover this.
- Split Calgary and Edmonton. Separate pages, ad campaigns and service areas, and adjust budgets when weather changes.
- Filter summer project leads. State minimums and service areas; tag leads by source.
- Use summer for reviews. The quieter heating months are when the review routine is easiest to establish.
Keep one more Alberta habit in mind: track Calgary and Edmonton leads in separate columns from day one, so you can see which city is actually paying for itself.

Frequently asked questions
Should I market Calgary and Edmonton the same way?
Treat them as separate markets with separate pages, reviews and ad campaigns. Customers search locally, and a business that tries to cover both from one generic page tends to rank well in neither.
Are there provincial rebates I can use in my marketing?
Official sources show no province-wide home heating rebate as of October 2026. The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers financing in participating municipalities, so check whether your area takes part before mentioning it.
Does the prepaid contractor licence affect my advertising?
It can matter if you take deposits and sell away from your usual place of business, for example door to door. Check the Alberta government guidance and get advice if it might apply to you.
